Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan ranked 160th in the freedom of speech rating published by Reporters Without Borders, a non-governmental organization, the Director of the Agency for Information and Mass Communications under the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Uzbekistan Komil Allamjonov said on his Facebook page.
“In the freedom of speech rating published by the Reporters Without Borders, Uzbekistan ranked 160th with 53.52 points. Two years ago we were at 169th place, and last year - at 165th,” he said.
“The report noted that Uzbek journalists began to cover such topical issues as corruption and forced labor, but self-censorship is still observed in the media sphere. This means that we still have a lot of tasks that must be implemented to ensure freedom of speech and protect the rights of journalists. After all, acute topics can be covered only when the media feel their support and protection,” Komil Allamjonov added.
“Last year, Tajikistan took the 149th place, in the current rating - 161. Russia is on the 149th place, reducing its figure by one position. The Republic of Kyrgyzstan, on the contrary, has risen in the ranking by 15 places to 83rd place,” he stressed.
“I think this report should become for us a kind of mirror reflecting the situation with the freedom of speech in the republic. And we need to make progress in this area. After all, all modern politics and ongoing reforms are closely related to the freedom of speech and press,” Allamjonov said.
