Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Representatives of the of the Government of Uzbekistan and various agencies of the United Nations met on 11 March 2019 in Tashkent to discuss their joint vision to further strengthen social protection in the country.
Participants reviewed the results achieved in 2018 and discussed the way forward for the next two years. The discussion focussed on improving effectiveness and addressing the coverage gaps in social protection. They underlined a need for a stronger social protection of children and families.
Participants also identified priority areas for reforming the social protection system, including pensions and benefits for children in Uzbekistan, in the context of the UNDAF work plan.
“Given that the 2019 is the year of “active investment and social development”, it is the year to make a real progress in strengthening social protection system, said Sascha Graumann, Representative, UNICEF Uzbekistan. “It is particularly important now in the context of the socio-economic reforms that may create short-term shocks for the population and hence need to be supported by a strong social protection system,” he added.
Currently, only 17% of children in Uzbekistan are provided with the social allowances. A more inclusive child benefit could become a powerful policy instrument to support families in giving the best start in life to every child. Recent analysis show that redesigning of the current system can help to increase the coverage to at least 75% of children up to 18 years old gradually by 2034.
