Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In 2010 Uzbekistan has been awarded two grants of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, which have been consolidated into a single Project. The consolidated Project "Continuing scale up of the response to HIV in Uzbekistan, with particular focus on most at risk populations and strengthening system and capacity for universal access to HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care in Uzbekistan" is implemented by UNDP as the Principal Recipient in close cooperation with governmental and non-government, as well as international organizations. Joint efforts resulted in successful project implementation, which received the highest donor rating – A1 and A2 in 2011 and 2012.
The Multisectorial Expert Council of Uzbekistan received an invitation letter from the Global Fund Secretariat to submit a Request for renewal for the Project Phase 2 (2014-2016).
In this regard, UNDP extended its technical support and recruited an international consultant to assist in developing the Request and ensure that it meets country needs and donor requirements, UNDP in Uzbekistan said.
In order to ensure participatory approach and take into account needs and proposals of all involved parties in the Request for Renewal, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan initiated establishment of four Thematic working groups, focusing on the main project areas – HIV prevention; treatment, care and support for people, living with HIV; enhancing the system of monitoring and evaluation and strengthening health system in the country. The groups are composed of representatives of the key partners and stakeholders. The results of the joint discussions will feed into the national Request for Renewal, which is due to be finalized for submission to the Global Fund by July 31, 2013.
The activities of the Phase 2 will envision scale up of activities focusing on HIV prevention among most at risk populations, as well as treatment, care and support, as stipulated in the proposal. UNDP’s PR role is on an interim basis and using its substantial experience in this role UNDP will support the Republican AIDS Center to build capacity of national entities to meet minimum Global Fund requirements to become Principal Recipient.
