Uzbek election laws fully meet world standards - TV
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Uzbek election legislation fully meets international standards, said a special TV programme entitled "Saylov - Demokratiya Kozgusi" (Election is Reflection of Democracy) broadcast on 28 October.

Uzbekistan observes international laws on elections, legal expert Ahror Hoshimxonov said.

"All countries, above all, acknowledge the supremacy of international laws. Their main goal is to draft their legislation based on these international norms. The important sign of democracy - election laws - in Uzbekistan, like in any developed democratic countries, meet the international standards, norms and regulations. It would be right to say that the country’s election legislation has been drafted based on these standards," the legal expert said.

The broadcast also detailed some international standards for holding democratic elections. The programme was attended by legal experts only. They spoke about international documents on elections.

Speaking about gender equality in elections, legal expert Gulchehra Matkarimova said a percentage of female members of the Uzbek parliament met world standards.

"We may review the result of the 2004 parliamentary elections. Women won 21 seats out of 120 ones during the elections. These 21 women made up 18 per cent of the parliamentary seats. The most interesting thing is that some countries’ parliaments also have 18 per cent of female members. The Uzbek parliament has 18 per cent of women as well. In comparison with other countries with long parliamentary experience, it is a good result for us," she said.
