Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 18 January 2022, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan with a delegation from ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia).
The company takes an active part in a number of partner projects in the energy industry of Uzbekistan. In particular, as First Deputy Minister of Energy Azim Akhmedkhadjaev noted during the meeting, these are projects for the construction of thermal power plants (TPP) and wind power plants (WPP).
The meeting discussed the implementation of ongoing joint projects.
Currently, a Saudi company is implementing a project for the construction of a thermal power plant with a capacity of 1,500 MW near the existing Syrdarya thermal power plant. During the discussion, the parties noted the planned progress of construction and installation work at the facility, where the construction of the rotational camp has been completed, earthworks are underway, and an order for technological equipment has been placed.
As part of this project worth US$780 million, a loan agreement was signed and it is planned to attract financing from leading international financial institutions and organizations, including the EBRD, OPEC, Bank of China and others.
In Bukhara region, ACWA Power plans to build two wind farms (500 MW each) using the "Fast-track" method (one-time design and construction with subsequent commissioning of the facility).
An investment agreement with the company on this project was signed in January 2021, and work is scheduled to begin in the second half of this year.
In addition, ACWA Power won the tender for a 100 MW wind farm project in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, offering the most reasonable tariffs.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the development of cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy, where the Saudi company has expert experience. Work in this direction in the country is being carried out as part of the implementation of the presidential resolution from 9 April 2021 “On measures to develop renewable and hydrogen energy in the Republic of Uzbekistan”. According to the document, the National Research Institute for Renewable Energy Sources is being created under the Ministry of Energy.
The parties noted their interest in intensifying joint work in the field of hydrogen energy.
In addition, during the meeting, issues of personnel training were discussed, in particular for working at new facilities with modern technologies in the field of renewable energy, which will be built with the participation of ACWA Power.
An agreement was reached to conduct in the near future, for this purpose, the selection of capable students from the energy college in the city of Shirin to study the issues of their practice at the facilities.
