Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - Farrukh Usmanov, Director of the Ikuo Hirayama International Caravanserai of Culture, was awarded an honorary diploma of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The award ceremony was held in Tashkent on 8 November.
The unique tradition of Japan - to reward ordinary citizens of Uzbekistan for their significant contribution to strengthening friendly Uzbek-Japanese relations - never ceases to amaze. This list will be replenished by people who, through their lives and activities, really influence the fact that the Uzbek people more and more know Japan in all the depths of its traditions, politics, science, modern urban studies and many other sides. And in many ways, the International Caravanserai of Culture Ikuo Hirayama shows in this example.
This cultural institution is unique, and not only for Uzbekistan, but also for Central Asia, as a minimum. What is its uniqueness? Director Farrukh Usmanov answers this question.
- The Ikuo Hirayama International Caravanserai of Culture was organized, on the one hand, at the initiative and at the expense of a citizen of Japan, and, on the other hand, is a state organization of Uzbekistan, is everything right?
- Indeed, this is so, moreover, a budgetary organization, entering the system of the Academy of Culture of the Republic of Uzbekistan, that is, our activity is funded by the state. And this, indeed, is the only such project in our Central Asian region. Known for his contribution to the study of the history of the Great Silk Road, the Japanese philanthropist Ikuo Hirayama built this institution as a cultural center that would comprehensively deal with just his favorite direction. And we also carry out this task in an unconventional way, since the activities of the International Caravanserai of Culture Ikuo Hirayama has three main directions.
- The first is the organization of various exhibitions, festivals aimed at researching, popularizing the Uzbek culture and, of course, since we are the Uzbek-Japanese center, and Japanese culture.
- The second type of our activity is an educational function, which consists in organizing various master classes, both for those already held, as well as for future specialists, as well as for a wide range of people interested in tea, including origami art. A feature of the last few years in this direction has been the emphasis on master classes for professionals. The reason is the desire to introduce the specialists of Uzbekistan with amazing techniques of not only the neighbors in the region, but also the masters of Japan. For example, in the field of artistic enamel, applications, where they reached amazing heights. Our acquaintance with the applique is limited mainly to activities at a young age, while in Japan it is very developed, and this technique largely serves the development of national art in this country. Uzbekistan also pays great attention to the revival and development of national culture, and this brings the two countries very close together.
- And, finally, the third area of work of the Caravanserai of Culture is the study of our cultural heritage through the organization of archaeological expeditions. All the archaeological finds held by the archaeological foundation of the International Caravanserai of Culture Ikuo Hirayama made as a result of our expeditions. Currently, in particular, we are conducting such studies in the Tashkent and Surkhandarya regions. This work is carried out jointly with partner organizations, including the Institute of Art Studies of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Russian Academy of Sciences and others.
As Farrukh Usmanov noted in an interview, and as all the regulars of the International Caravanserai of Culture Ikuo Hirayama know, the doors of this cultural center are always open for various initiatives. Combining simultaneously the functions of a gallery and a museum, educational and other courses, the Tashkent International Caravanserai of Culture is precisely the cultural center in all its flexibility and versatility. It is no accident that this cultural space, all with great success, has been used in recent years in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in Uzbekistan to organize various events that provide an opportunity, without leaving Uzbekistan, to get acquainted with many aspects of Japan.
“In recent years, the expansion of our international projects has been very pleasing,” Farrukh Usmanov further noted in an interview. - The Embassy of Japan joined the project Days of Japanese Culture in Uzbekistan several years ago, enriching it with its exhibits. And today we are doing a lot together, other embassies and international organizations are also connecting with the desire to present their culture and traditions. This trend is growing, as is the increasing openness of Uzbekistan to the whole world. This year alone, we have already held 28 events and many of them have been devoted to the culture and traditions of Japan.
The new Ambassador of Japan to Uzbekistan, Yoshinori Fujiyama, also managed to verify the activity of the International Caravanserai of Culture Ikuo Hirayama.
“I have been working in Uzbekistan for two months and have already managed to attend an exhibition and a concert that took place at the International Caravanserai of Culture,” he said in an interview. - At a concert, a young Japanese performer demonstrated her play on the traditional Uzbek instrument dutar. A video of this concert will be included in the film dedicated to the traditional friendly relations between our two countries. There are cultural centers founded by citizens of Japan in several other countries, for example, in Germany, where I worked before. But, I want to note that among them, the International Caravanserai of Culture of Ikuo Hirayama is unique.
Construction of the Ikuo Hirayama International Caravanserai of Culture in Tashkent began in 2000 and ended in 2001, its grand opening in connection with the assignment of official status took place on December 12, 2002.
Since 2006, the director of the organization is Farrukh Usmanov, and during his work in the International Caravanserai of Culture Ikuo Hirayama, about 150 events dedicated to the culture and art of Japan were held.
