Namagan citizen jailed for 5.5 years for IS propaganda materials

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Citizen of Namangan was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison on charges of smuggling in materials that promote religious extremism, separatism and fundamentalism.
The Namangan Region criminal court adopted the corresponding decision, the press service of the State Customs Committee of Uzbekistan said.
The convict was detained at Andijan Airport in April on arrival from St Petersburg (Russia). Two 8-GB MicroSD flash cards were discovered among chocolates in his luggage during a search.
On inspection, it was revealed that the cards contain 1,230 audio and video files on a religious subject with 20 hours of recording, 14.8 GB in size.
An examination showed these were religious lectures made by the extremist organization Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Uzbek songs recorded in Syria that praise the terrorist organization ISIS (Islamic State), as well as materials that call for the creation of an Islamic caliphate.
