Delegation of World Bank visits Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of World Bank led by Mark Woodward, lead social development specialist, paid a visit to Uzbekistan to discuss issues of cooperation in social and labour sphere.
The delegation met with officials of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare of Population, Council of Trust Unions Federation and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan to exchange information and discuss current state and perspectives of cooperation between Uzbekistan and World Bank.
The sides discussed work of the mission of exports of Inspection Panel of the World Bank, which visited Uzbekistan in November 2014. Inspection Panel positively rated process of reforms in labour and cotton sectors, inexistence of problems with use of child labour at cotton picking and realization of the joint programme of child labour in Uzbekistan by the Government and ILO.
The World Bank delegation informed the Uzbek side that World Bank and ILO signed a memorandum of understanding, in which the cooperation framework was outlined. In line with the memorandum, the sides are planning to conduct research in agriculture sector and set up feedback mechanism and monitoring of the third side of the projects implemented in Uzbekistan at financial assistance of the World Bank.
Taking into account that all discussed mechanisms should include component on raising potential and awareness of the targeted groups, the sides reached preliminary agreement that the World Bank will help to raise capacity and legal awareness of beneficiaries within the World Bank projects.
Within the visit, the mission considered issues of constructive cooperation among Uzbekistan, ILO and World Bank.
World Bank Country Office in Uzbekistan in cooperation with Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare of Population, Council of Trust Unions Federation and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan held a roundtable with participation of the Uzbek NGOs on 5 February.
World Bank Uzbekistan Country Director Junghun Cho said that World Bank pays great attention to cooperation with the NGOs and experience of Uzbekistan in this context is important.
The Uzbek side underlined that it pays attention to establishing communication between interested state and non-governmental organization in labour relations in agriculture sector.
At the meeting, the sides considered implemented projects of the World Bank in agriculture sector. NGOs briefed the World Bank officials on their activities and participation in national monitoring of child labour in Uzbekistan.
