Uzbekistan, South Korea hold consultation on consular affairs

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The third meeting between the directors-general for consular affairs of the Republic of Korea and Uzbekistan took place in Seoul on 8 October, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea said.
It was presided over by Director-General for Overseas Koreans and Consular Affairs Lee Myung-yul and head of the Consular Department Alisher Sakhibov of the Foreign Ministries of South Korea and Uzbekistan, respectively.
In the meeting, the two sides had a constructive discussion on bilateral consular issues, including ways to better protect their nationals in each other’s countries; to streamline the visa processing; and to promote systematic cooperation on other consular matters. They also reviewed the progress in the implementation of the bilateral Agreement on Temporary Labor Activities of Nationals of One State in the Territory of the Other State.
South Korea side extended appreciation to the Uzbek government for setting up in May the “Korean Desk” at its policy agency tasked with handling incidents and accidents involving Koreans. The two sides agreed to work closely together to prevent South Korea nationals from sustaining criminal damages and to resolve such cases if and when they occur.
The South Korean side asked the Uzbek government to streamline its visa processing for South Korea nationals who visit Uzbekistan for tourism, business and official purposes. The Uzbek delegation responded that the Uzbek government will hold inter-agency consultations on ways to improve the relevant procedure.
The Uzbek delegation asked the government of South Korea to pay attention to the protection of rights and interests of the Uzbekistani workers in South Korea, as well as of those married to nationals of South Korea. In response, the South Korean side explained the government’s efforts to protect rights and interests of the Uzbekistanis in South Korea.
The two sides, acknowledging the need to hold the bilateral meeting of directors-general for consular affairs on a regular basis, agreed to hold their next meeting in Uzbekistan at a convenient time in 2015.
