Uzbekenergo to direct US$335m to modernize hydro power stations

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekenergo state joint stock company will implement projects on modernization of hydro power stations with total cost of US$335 million till the end of 2016, RIA Novosti reported quoting source in the Uzbek company.
Six projects of modernization of cascades of two separate stations and four cascaded of hydro power station in Tashkent and Ferghana region were included to investment programme for 2014-2016, the source in Uzbekenergo said.
The projects envisage modernization of technological equipment, which will increase generating capacities of the hydro power stations in total up to 70 megawatt.
The project will be financed due to loans of foreign financial institutions and loans of the Uzbek banks.
Uzbekenergo announced pre-qualification for modernization of Farkhad hydro power station and hydro power station No. 14 of Lower Bozsu cascade in Tashkent region. The project with total cost of US$165.7 million is implemented due to loan of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) for US$100 million.
In May, the IDB issued US$100 million to Uzbekistan to modernize three cascaded of the hydro power stations in Tashkent region. The tender for modernization of them will be announced in 2014.
Currently, Uzbekstan has 45 power stations with total capacity of 12,400 megawatts. Uzbekenergo owns 16 power stations with the capacity of 12,040 megawatts. The potential production volume makes up 56-57 billion KWH.
Uzbekistan increased production of electricity by 3.1% year-on-year in nine monthsof 2013 to 40.356 billion KWH.
