President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov participated at the opening ceremony of the six session of the Asia solar energy forum.
In his speech, the President of the Asian Development Bank Takehiko Nakao said that Uzbekistan has a large land mass, plenty of sunshine, and the highly skilled and educated human resources needed to become a major player in solar energy development in Central Asian region. For Uzbekistan, large scale solar energy development can supply clean energy, as well provide high quality jobs, as it seeks to become a technology hub for conducting research, manufacturing, and maintenance, of advanced solar energy systems.
During independence years, Uzbekistan accumulated enough experience to use alternative sources in energy, especially in solar energy as there are 320 sunny days in the country and annual potential of solar energy exceeds 51 billion tonnes of oil equivalent. This will allow Uzbekistan to use solar energy in production of electricity, hot water and heating, drying fruits and vegetables, etc.
The forum underlined that Uzbekistan have great potential in renewable energy and good scientific base. Uzbekistan Science Academy formed scientic school on use of solar energy, bioenergy, construction of solar energy equipment, etc.
The Government of Uzbekistan adopted several documents, which are directed at developing renewable energy in Uzbekistan. There are several enterprises, which specialize in production of helio and wind energy systems in Uzbekistan, which are used in some houses, constructed in rural areas, as well as some social objects.
The participants of the forum visited Samarkand region to familiarize with the project on construction of solar energy plant. The capacity of the plant will make up 100 megawatt.
At the forum, the participants also presented information on achievements of local specialists in the area. The participants visited Sun scientific center in Tashkent region, which has solar oven with the capacity of 1 megawatt. The center studies sun and carries out research.
