Uzbekistan Temir Yollari to update its fleet by 70%

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan Temir Yollari state joint stock railway company will update its fleet by 70% by the end of 2015, the chairperson of the board of Uzbekistan Temir Yollari said in interview to newspaper Pravda Vostoka.
He said that currently 70% of cargoes and 60% of passengers, as well as 90% of cargo transportations of imported and exported goods, are transported by railway.
He said that President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a resolution “On priorities on developing of industry of Uzbekistan in 2011-2015” from 15 December 2010, which gave stimulus to improvement of transport system of the country.
The document envisages organization of movement of electric trains and introduction of energy saving technologies. The railroad Tuqimachi-Angren has joined to the electrified lines Tashkent-Samarkand and Tashkent-Hojikent. The electrification works of two areas of railway with total length 156.6 km between Yangiyer and Jizzakh was completed, Ramatov said.
Achilbay Ramatov said that these projects will help to cut expenses of use of trains by 23% and save fuel and time spent to transportation of freights and passengers.
He said that Uzbekistan Temir Yollari works on rehabilitation of 240 km of railroads, electrification of the area Maroqand-Qarshi and speeding up of electrification of Qarshi-Termez area. These measures will help to launch transportation across country with use of electric locomotives, he said.
Ramatov stated that the company implemented a project on reconstruction of foundry shop. Its implementation will help to increase production and repair of cargo cars. It will allow produce 1,200 new freight cars and 15 passenger cars a year.
The company received seven new electric freight locomotives of O’ZEL model, produced in China. The company will receive four more such locomotives by the end of 2013, he said.
He said that the electric locomotives will be used at mountainous areas at the railway Maroqand-Qarshi-Termez. The cost of the project is US$47.3 million.
The project is financed due to loan of Chinese Eximbank for US$42 million and own resources of Uzbekistan Temir Yollari. The locomotives are delivered by Chinese consortium CNTIC and CNRDLRC, he added.
Achilbay Ramatov added that due to project on purchase of China-made locomotives, Uzbekistan Temir Yollari updated its fleet with 34 modern electric locomotives and by the end of 2013 their number will reach 38. By the end of 2015, the locomotive fleet will be updated by 70%.
In nine months of 2013, Uzbekistan Temir Yollari transported over 13.9 million passengers in nine months of 2013. Over 47.5 million tonnes of freight were transported from railway stations of the company, he added.
At the same time, over 5.9 million of transit goods were transported and imported some 7.8 million tonnes of freight and exported over 5.5 million tonnes of cargoes.
Ramatov also said that Uzbek railway company constructed and commissioned 106 km of railway in Afghanistan. He said that it is planned to construct a corridor to Iran and access to Persian ports in future.
