Presidents: Economies of Uzbekistan and Latvia fulfill each other

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov and President of Latvia Andris Bērziņš held negotiations in Riga, Latvia, on 17 October 2013.
Expressing gratitude for warm welcome, President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov underlined that the Latvian-Uzbek relations never had problems and bilateral relations are developing with fast trends.
“Uzbekistan supported independence of Latvia and we see that Latvia achieved a lot in all areas and hold more important role in Europe and the world,” Uzbek leader said.
President of Latvia Andris Bērziņš said that Uzbekistan and Latvia marked the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2012 and added that Uzbekistan is an important partner of Latvia in Central Asia.
Andris Bērziņš noted that Latvia is interested in further developing the Latvian-Uzbek political and economic relations.
Speaking about foreign political policy of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov said that Uzbekistan does not participate and will not participate in military blocks and will not provide its territories for military bases. The Uzbek leader, assessing the situation in Central Asia, said that it is difficult and situation in Afghanistan should be solved via dialogue, not with military force.
President Islam Karimov said that Uzbekistan will not interfere to internal affairs of Afghanistan, but will continue to develop cooperation with the country on bilateral level.
Islam Karimov said that Uzbekistan and Latvia should develop cooperation in transportation and transit of cargoes. He said that Uzbekistan and Latvia could cooperate in transportation of the Uzbek goods through ports and transport infrastructure of Latvia to Europe and other regions. Uzbek leader said that Uzbekistanis interested in expanding trade turnover with Latvia. He said that there is great potential and results of Riga Food confirm this. He said that the Uzbek companies signed agreements for over US$100 million within the exhibition.
Latvian President underlined that development of cooperation with Uzbekistan and Central Asian region, as a hole, is one of priorities for Latvia. He said that Uzbekistan and Latvia should develop relations in such areas as education and healthcare.
Andris Bērziņš expressed his gratitude to Uzbekistan for its cooperation in supply of non-lethal goods to Afghanistan through Northern Distribution network. Latvian leader said that the route should be turned to commercial corridor in future. The route has great potential and will link Asia and Europe, he said.
Presidents of two nations said that economies of Latvia and Uzbekistan have different structure and do not compete each other, but fulfill each other. So, the countries have great potential for cooperation, they said.
In the result of the talks, Uzbekistan and Latvia signed a joint declaration of the heads of state, along with a range of agreements designed to bolster the bilateral cooperation in political, commercial, investment, transport and communications spheres and environmental protection.
