Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The University of Westminster and Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) celebrated the achievements of their students at the 2013 Graduation Ceremony held on 11 October.
During the ceremony, academic colleagues publicly declared their confidence in the new graduates. Graduates carry the great responsibility of representing the honour of the University of Westminster and eight centuries of academic history of the United Kingdom. They also have the considerable honour of being graduates of Westminster International University in Tashkent.
The Graduation Ceremony is part of the tradition of British higher education dating back to the 12th century when the first universities were established. Its essential features have been the same since the first ceremony was held; the academic staff being called “masters” and the term “degree”, from the Latin ‘gradus‘, meaning the step from being a student to graduating with a degree or certificate.
A Mace is used in the formal celebration at the Graduation Ceremonies of the University. A traditional symbol of independence and academic tradition, the University of Westminster presented a specially commissioned Mace to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan for the Inaugural Ceremony of Westminster International University in Tashkent in May 2003.
The Westminster Mace was crafted from a fallen 200 year old English Oak tree with an inscribed plate of Old Welsh Silver. It is permanently displayed in the University and used at the Graduation Ceremony. In 2012 WIUT introduced its own tradition of a Graduate Book, hand-made by Uzbek craftsmen, containing all the names of Graduates from the inauguration of the University. It is formally presented to Graduates at each ceremony as testimony to their achievements.
