Uzbekistan marks International Day of Peace

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Park of culture and recreation named after Babur in Tashkent city hosted an event dedicated to the International Day of Peace on 20 September 2013.
The event included a painting contest among children, a concert with participation of celebrities, representatives of national cultural centers, sport federations and clubs. One of the main campaign of the event was “Peace Bell”, ringing of which reminded intention of all to ensure peace, refuse from violence and promote peace and accord.
The event was organized by Women’s Council, National Association of NGOs of Uzbekistan, Council of friendship and spiritual-education societies with foreign countries in partnership with Tashkent city administration, Social Initiative Support Fund, Center for support of civil initiation, and others.
Representatives of NGOs and civil society institutes of Tashkent city and Tashkent region, representatives of the UN agencies, international and foreign organization, ministries and departments of Uzbekistan, students of schools and universities and others. The event was aimed at celebration of the International Day of Peace.
The event was launched with the painting contest among children, which also created chance to children to communicate with each other and celebrate the holiday.
The message of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on occasion of the International Day of Peace was read at the event, which condemned violence and called for global peace.
After the concert and speeches of the representatives of the international organizations, the Peace Bell was rang, rings of which called for peace in the world and bright future.
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution 36/67PDF document of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982.
In 2001, the General Assembly by unanimous vote adopted resolution 55/282PDF document, which established 21 September as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire.
The United Nations invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.
