NGOs receive aid for 30bn soums in 2008-2013

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan hosted a session of parliamentary commission on management of resources of the Public fund on support of NGOs and other civil society institutes under the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan.
The session was attended by members of the commission, MPs and Senators of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, NGOs and media.
At the session, it was noted that NGOs and other institutes of civil society received financial support for 30 billion soums from the state budget as a subsidies, social orders and grants.
The chairperson of the parliamentary commission on management of resources of the Public fund on support of NGOs and other civil society institutes under the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Akmal Saidov said that the session considered projects of NGO and civil society institutes, which were submitted to two contests for state grants, which were held from 10 June to 15 July 2013.
It was said that one of priority directions of the activities of the parliamentary commission is to support NGOs, which work in such areas as ecologic safety, protection of environment, plants and animals, health of people, etc. The government support Ecologic Movement of Uzbekistan, which unites over 250 NGOs and civil society institutes.
At the session, the commission adopted decision to issue 690 million soums to implementation of 48 projects within the state grant “Raising activity of population and NGOs in work on improving look of cities, mahallas and streets, as well as solving issues related to protection of environment, health and promote healthy lifestyle”.
Implementation of these projects will help to raise medical and ecological culture of population in the regions, hold spiritual-education events to promote healthy lifestyle, strengthen partnership between civil society institutes and state bodies, etc.
The commission also considered activities of youth organizations such as Kamolot, Kelajak Ovozi, etc. It was noted that several projects are implemented on employment of young people. It was said that NGOs and civil society institutes have been implementing over 30 socially important projects on improving knowledge of young people, including in human rights.
The session participants noted that NGOs and civil society institutes should expand work on support of youth and their development. The parliamentary commission considered over 120 projects of NGOs and selected 43 of them. These projects will receive 600 million soums of financial support.
The session also studied issues on stimulating participation of NGOs in implementation of the UN MDGs. It was said that NGOs are implementing 359 projects directed at improving ecologic culture, supporting social vulnerable layers of population, raising their income, improving quality of education and medical services, developing renewable energy, etc. All these projects were supported by the parliamentary commission and they received 5 billion soums in 2012-2013. At the session, it was decided to provide 1.29 billion soums to implementation of another 101 projects.
