Saudi authorities to install electronic gates in Mecca

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Saudi Arabia is paying attention to pilgrimage to sacred places of Mecca and Medina and doing all necessary to improve pilgrimage process.
Minister of Hajj Bandar bin Mohammad Hajjar highly rated level of Umrah season, which ended on 8 August. Last pilgrims of the season left the Kingdom on 22 August.
He noted that advanced technologies played key role in successful organization of the pilgrimage, which covered from issue of visas and air tickets to arrival of pilgrims, as well as interaction of various ministers and companies.
Inexistence of electronic system on control of entry and exit of pilgrims increased number of foreign labour migrants, violating rules in Saudi Arabia, the information service of the Committee on religious affairs of Uzbekistan said.
Bandar bin Mohammad Hajjar said that some 5.1 million people conducted pilgrimage in Umrah season, while some 5.3 million people obtained visas to Saudi Arabia.
Saudi authorities are planning to implement a project on installation of seven electronic gates at entry in Mecca to improve organization of pilgrimage and their safety. Currently, 31 companies are participating in tender on supply of electronic gates.
In line with the projects, each pilgrims will receive electronic bracelets with information about pilgrims. The bracelets will help to identify person at entry in Mecca and confirm their legality of their visit.
It is also planned to equip buses, used by pilgrims, with scanners, which will read date of the bracelets.
Bandar bin Mohammad Hajjar said that new equipment can be tested in upcoming Hajj-2013 season.
