Uzbekistan, Ukraine consider issues of economic cooperation

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Ukraine welcomes expansion of number of participants of the agreement on free trade zone in the CIS, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Igor Prasolov said at the meeting with the First Deputy Minister for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan Akmal Kamalov.
Uzbekistan joined to the agreement on free trade zone in the CIS on 31 May 2013, when a corresponding protocol was signed. The document should be ratified by member states and Ukraine said it will start process once it receives approved copy of the protocol from the CIS Executive Committee.
Igor Prasolov said that there will be no problems with ratification process. Ministry of Economic Development will start intergovernmental procedures to ratify the protocol after it received the document from the CIS Executive Committee.
He expressed his assurance that the Ukrainian parliament will pass it quickly as it will improve trade turnover and positively impact its economy.
First Deputy Minister for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan Akmal Kamalov expressed gratitude to Igor Prasolov for his support during negotiations and expressed his assurance that the document will lift cooperation between Uzbekistan and Ukraine to new quality level.
He said that Uzbekistan considers Ukraine as one of its important partners in the CIS and the world. He said that Uzbekistan is interested in expanding structure of trade turnover, which currently is quite narrow. He noted that there are great opportunities to raise trade turnover. Uzbek official said that Uzbekistan demonstrates stable economic growth as it records over 8% GDP growth in last several years.
He said that Uzbekistan and Ukraine could cooperate in various directions, including textile, fruit and vegetables processing, chemistry, transport and other sectors. He said that the sides should increase the volumes and expand cooperation.
Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine said that Uzbekistan was the seventh largest trade partner of Ukraine in the CIS in 2012. Trade turnover between two states hit US$582.4 million in 2012.
Exports of Ukraine to Uzbekistan reached US$464.84 million and rose by 24.8% or US$92.33 million. Imports from Uzbekistan to Ukraine reached US$117.56 million.
