Uzbekistan’s economy grows by 7.5% in 1Q 2013

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Gross domestic product (GDP) of Uzbekistan grew by 7.5% in January-March 2013, a session of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan dedicated to the results of social-economic development in the first quarter of 2013 said.
In the first quarter of 2013, the industrial production of Uzbekistan rose by 6%, agriculture production – 6.2% and construction works – 13.2%.
The state budget was executed with a surplus of 0.4 percent of GDP. The inflation rate has not exceeded the forecast parameters.
The session said that the production of consumer goods in Uzbekistan grew by 9.4% in the reporting period. Retail trade turnover rose by 13.1% and services – 9%.
The share of services in GDP increased to 52.5% compared to 52.1% a year earlier. Production of localized goods grew by 40.4%, with an estimated effect of import substitution for US$1 billion.
The active investment policy, aimed primarily at accelerated development and enhancement of economic modernization, contributed to the growth of the investment volume by 7.2%, including increase in foreign investments by 35.5%, of which about 84% were foreign direct investment. 587 manufacturing facilities have been commissioned and 114 new investment projects worth US$4.3 billion have been started.
Over 1.3 trillion soums have been issued to implement the State Program "Year of well-being and prosperity in the first quarter.
Uzbekistan carried out construction and reconstruction works for 62 billion soums at the Uzbek National Highway in the first three months of 2013. The reconstruction of the 42-km stretch of the Tashkent-Osh highway bypassing the city of Kokand was completed and 45-km railway lines were rehabilitated.
It was noted that 250,400 new jobs were created in Uzbekistan in the first three months, including over 150,000 or about 60% in rural areas.
