Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 23 December 2024, an incident in Syria sparked widespread outrage in the international community.
In the city of Sqalbiya, located in the Hama province, a group of eight militants set fire to a Christmas tree, according to Al Watan.
As reported by RIA Novosti, the attack was carried out by foreign militants, highlighting the persistent instability in the region. This act of vandalism, committed just two days after the installation of the festive tree, drew sharp condemnation from local authorities and international representatives, particularly in the lead-up to Christmas.
Father Magher Haddad, the head of the local Christian community, confirmed that the perpetrators have been apprehended. "The tree and festive decorations will be restored," he stated, emphasizing that the incident would not break the community’s spirit.
The BBC notes that local residents remain concerned about safety and the preservation of religious traditions amidst the ongoing conflict.
The situation in Syria remains complex, despite ongoing efforts to establish peace. International organizations, including Human Rights Watch, have called for stronger measures to protect religious minorities and prevent such incidents in the future.
