Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 4 November 2019, a delegation of international experts in the field of religious freedom, as well as representatives of various faiths of the United States arrived in Uzbekistan.
According to the Embassy of Uzbekistan, a series of seminars, round tables and expert meetings with the participation of more than 40 theological scholars, experts in the field of law and religion, leaders of faiths and socially active women from the USA, Great Britain, Sweden, and Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Cambodia and Iraq are planned within the visit..
The American side will be represented at the meetings by the head of the Institute for Global Engagement Chris Sayple, former Ambassador on Special Assignments in the Field of Religious Freedom David Saperstein, one of the recognized leaders of the Muslim community in North America, Imam Mohammed Majid, pastor Bob Roberts - widely known among religious and socio-political circles USA and other reputable scientists.
The agreement on organizing inter-confessional dialogue, as well as expert meetings to discuss legal and institutional reforms in the field of religious freedom was reached during the July visit of Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov to Washington and as part of bilateral meetings with US Special Commissioner Sam Brownback in New York in September this year.
A seminar on the rule of law and religious freedoms will be held in Tashkent and Samarkand during the week. The seminar program provides an overview of key issues relating religion, laws, government regulation and security measures, as well as studying the practice of ensuring freedom of religion in countries in various political, social and cultural contexts.
The training is expected to involve experts in the field of religion and law, including from the International Center for Legal and Religious Studies of Brigham Young University, a leading American university that provides advisory assistance in promoting legal reforms in the field of religious freedoms in more than 50 countries.
The event will also include an expert meeting with representatives of the National Center for Human Rights, the Ministry of Justice and the Committee on Religious Affairs of Uzbekistan to discuss the bill on freedom of conscience and religious organizations.
A scientific and practical seminar on strengthening the role of women in the spiritual and educational sphere will be held as part of the initiative of the Center for Women, Faith & Leadership (CWFL) Institute for Global Engagement, aimed at developing women's professional and leadership qualities in promoting religious freedoms and preventing radicalization, violence and conflict. The seminar will be attended by 10 women experts from various countries with extensive experience in the spiritual and educational sphere and charity work.
Discussion of common approaches in the field of religious freedoms, building mutual trust and avoiding religious conflicts will be the main subject of interfaith dialogue involving pastors, rabbis and imams from three US cities - Seattle (Washington), Austin (Texas) and Pittsburgh (state) Pennsylvania), as well as representatives of religious faiths from Tashkent, Ferghana and Nukus.
It is also planned to hold the first meeting of the working group under the Memorandum between the Institute for Strategic and Interregional Studies, the Independent Institute for Monitoring the Formation of Civil Society and the Institute for Global Engagement, signed during the visit of the American delegation led by Ambassador Samuel Brownback to Uzbekistan in September 2018.
