Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - A briefing on the problems of Tashkent city’s drainage system and flood prevention measures was held at the Information and Mass Communications Agency.
On the part of the khokimiyat, deputies of Tashkent khokim Bakhtiyor Rakhmankulov and Khayot Inogamov, as well as the head of the city development department, Azamjon Rizashev, participated in the briefing.
Representatives of responsible organizations explained the causes of floods in Tashkent this spring, talked about the current state of the drainage system and what had already been done to prevent such situations.
“In total, 70 problem areas were identified, 58 of them - problems with flooding - resolved, 12 sites remained, projects are ready for them and there is financing, problems will be resolved by the end of the year,” the officials said.
"We need to prepare a drainage system, for example, a bag of garbage can clog a 300 mm pipe and disable the entire system," it was said.
“128 channels are flowing in Tashkent, 16 of them perform a transit function, originating in Tashkent region, then also flowing out of the city. Their waters are used for agricultural purposes,” the officials added.
“Last year, Tashkent city khokimiyat identified 1,400 illegal buildings located on the banks of the city’s transit channels and counted nearly a thousand cases in which individuals and legal entities dumped sewage directly into the canals. Now we have put everything in order, in half the cases the cases were decided through the court,” it was stated.
