The US Department of State underlines the efforts of Uzbekistan to eliminate forced labor

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The US State Department published a report with data for 2018 on 189 countries on 20 June.
The report notes that Uzbekistan has taken significant measures to eradicate forced labor during the cotton harvest. Such measures as increasing the remuneration of cotton pickers, stopping the practice of attracting certain categories of public servants to the collection were underlined.
According to the report, international observers have no obstacles to work in Uzbekistan, independent human rights defenders take part in the monitoring. The country has a ban on the use of child labor.
The report of the agency refers to the continued high-level commitment to ending forced labor, and also marks the adoption of government regulations to prevent the involvement of citizens, including civil servants, in forced community work.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations will continue to implement the policies of the President and the Government to eradicate forced labor, as well as the protection of the rights of migrant workers abroad.
During 2018, the Minister of Employment and Labor Relations of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sherzod Kudbiev, took part in a number of international meetings devoted to the elimination of forced labor in Uzbekistan, including the annual meeting of the international coalition Cotton Campaign. The powers of the State Labor Inspectorate have been expanded. In December 2018, the Ministry introduced to the Parliament amendments to legislation aimed at significantly increasing the responsibility for forced labor, the ministry’s hotline on accepting forced labor cases continues its work.
In order to increase the protection of the rights of labor migrants, Uzbekistan joined the International Organization for Migration. Uzbekistan also opened offices of the Agency for Labor Migration in the Russian Federation and the Republic of Korea, and returned 950 citizens to their homeland who found themselves in a difficult situation abroad at the expense of the Fund for Support and Protection the rights and interests of citizens engaged in labor activities abroad.
