Potato seeds to be grown by in-vitro in Kashkadarya

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The opening of a laboratory worth US$8 million and a complex designed to grow 5,000 tonnes of new generation potato seeds is planned in Kashkadarya region based on the investment program of the Republic of Poland.
The project will allow the cultivation of potato tubers with a total volume of 8 million per year using the in-vitro method.
This was announced on 6 June 2019 during a meeting organized by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the participation of representatives of the Polish-Uzbek Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Polish Institute for Seed Farming and Potato Protection, Zamarte Potato Etiştirish LLC, Research Institute of Vegetables and Melon potato, Center for Standardization of Agriculture, Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
Issues of project implementation and development of cooperation in the field of potato seed production between Uzbekistan and Poland were discussed in a bilateral format.
- As a result of the implementation of this project in our country, it will be possible to regulate the import of potato seeds by expanding domestic opportunities, provide the population with jobs, and improve the quality of potato seeds. Today, in cooperation with the Republic of Poland, systematic work is being carried out to supply farms with healthy, virus-free potato seeds,” Deputy Minister of Agriculture Saidkamol Khodjaev said.
It should be noted that this year in Uzbekistan on the territory of 135 hectares it is planned to grow 2.8 million tonnes of potatoes. At present, on average 20,000-30,000 tonnes of potato seeds are imported to our republic from different countries every year.
According to the data, in 2017, 193,622 tonnes of potatoes were imported from Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey and Pakistan in the amount of US$23,551. This year the figure was 224,674 tonnes.
