Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 22 March 2019, a special event and a press conference on the activities of the Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Region took place in the Center of International Conferences in Geneva.
A delegation of Uzbekistan took part in the event, including Deputy Minister of Investment and Trade Badriddin Abidov, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis Boriy Alikhanov and First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalp kstan Jusipbek Kazbekova.
According to the Permanent Representation of Uzbekistan at the UN Office in Geneva, the event was attended by leaders and representatives of international organizations, the diplomatic corps, and international NGOs in the field of environmental protection.
In his speech, Badriddin Abidov gave detailed information on the systemic and phased reforms being carried out in the country in the socio-economic, political spheres and in the field of environmental protection. The attendees were acquainted with the complex measures implemented by the state to improve the environmental situation and ensure the socio-economic development of the Aral Sea region.
The creation of the International Innovation Center on the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the declaration of Aral Sea Basin as a zone of environmental innovations and technologies to further enhance the measures taken to create conditions for attracting foreign investment and comprehensive implementation of the principles of green economy, environmentally friendly, energy saving and water saving technologies, also to prevent further desertification.
In her speech, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), Olga Algaerova, underscored that the UN’s support for the initiative of Uzbekistan to establish a Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Sea Region was a logical continuation of the active dialogue between Uzbekistan and the international community. eliminating the consequences of the environmental crisis in the region and improving the socio-economic situation, raising the standard of living population.
She also expressed readiness to strengthen the cooperation of the EEC with Uzbekistan in the existing cooperation programs, as well as the development of new projects in the areas designated by the President of the country as priorities in the framework of the adopted Development Strategy of Uzbekistan. It was emphasized that ECE, when working with donors, will take the necessary measures to facilitate the raising of funds for the Multi-Partner Trust Fund.
The director of the United Nations Development Program for Europe and the CIS countries Mirjana Spolyarich Egger, for her part, highly appreciated the efforts of Uzbekistan to take the necessary measures to mitigate the effects of the drying up of the Aral Sea. As noted, the creation of the Trust Fund "will open a new chapter in the history of the suffering region."
She said that the efforts of the Government of Uzbekistan to revitalize the Multi-Partner Trust Fund to attract financial resources is one of the most successful in the history of the UN and encouraged the participants to take all necessary measures aimed at helping to enhance the attraction of financial resources for the effective implementation of targeted projects in the Aral Sea region.
UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan, Helena Fraser, made a detailed presentation on the measures taken by the UN Office in Uzbekistan to revitalize the Multi-Partner Trust Fund and the activities undertaken to attract funds from donor countries and international financial institutions.
In general, the event allowed for a substantive exchange of views with representatives of Germany, Sweden, Finland, Qatar, the World Intellectual Property Organization and other structures on promising areas of cooperation with the Multi-Partner Trust Fund for the Aral Sea Coast.
Following the special event at the Palais des Nations, a press conference was also held for journalists with a presentation of the goals and objectives of the Foundation on human security for the Aral Sea region in Uzbekistan, its program and operational activities.
