Israli experts share experience on irrigation techniques with specialists in Karakalpakstan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- From 27 to 29 November 2018, in Nukus, Israeli experts conducted a training on “Advanced and Efficient Irrigation Techniques”, where they presented the prospects for using drip irrigation technology and integrating water-saving technologies in agriculture, innovative methods of farming and water management.
The training was organized in partnership with MASHAV - the Agency for International Cooperation under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel for specialists from relevant departments of Karakalpakstan, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Water Resources, the Council of Farmers, Dekhkan Farms and Household Owners, Local Farmers, Managers pasture community cooperatives, as well as representatives of pilot areas on agriculture and water issues.
In his welcoming speech, the Ambassador of the State of Israel noted the importance of using modern irrigation methods in agriculture as one of the key areas of the economy. He also stressed that the experience offered by the specialists in the framework of the training is relevant for farmers and dekhkans living in a region with difficult climatic conditions caused by the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
Over the course of three days, experts familiarized participants with international experience in assessing water availability and water consumption used in Central Asian countries, talked about the development prospects of advanced irrigation technologies, and compared various methods based on economic models to clearly explain the possibilities and benefits of their use in Karakalpakstan.
Taking into account local climatic features, special attention was paid to the session on crop cultivation technologies, using drip irrigation on the example of cotton and various vegetables. Specialists also spoke about possibility of their use in Karakalpakstan, shared detailed information on installation, operation and maintenance of such systems.
When using drip irrigation of land, water consumption is significantly reduced, for example, when irrigating potatoes by 50%, corn by 25% compared with traditional irrigation. Moreover, the yield increases by an average of 30%. Another advantage of this method is the uniform distribution of fertilizer.
On the final day, the experts spoke about the possibilities of using treated wastewater for irrigation of crops and landscapes, the existing requirements for the quality of treated water, restrictions and certificates for the right to irrigate relevant crops, presented an ecological approach to reuse water in greenhouses.
