Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A high-level international conference was organized in Tashkent to discuss various measures for protection of vulnerable children in Uzbekistan. The event brought together the country’s Government officials and international experts to deliberate over national policies and good international practices.
The participants of the two-day conference will present issues of protection of children in difficult situations, including those living without parental care and those in conflict with the law. The conference will focus on strengthening an effective social protection system in Uzbekistan based on best international experiences.
Based on an assessment conducted by the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan and UNICEF, there is a need to establish a single coordinating body for child protection in the country, and improve social work as a profession. Strengthening the social protection system, along with improvement of healthcare, education and youth policy, is among the priorities of Uzbekistan’s 2017-2021 Development Strategy.
“Every state in the world needs to invest in a strong child protection system that can identify vulnerable families and children, provide them with social services that meet their specific needs, and ensure the coordination and monitoring of that service provision,” said Sascha Graumann, UNICEF Representative in Uzbekistan. “Effective child protection systems are created by assessing and deliberating over the gaps in the existing system for preventing and responding to cases of violence, abuse and neglect.”
The international conference has been organized by the Republican Center for Social Adaptation of Children, “Sen Yolg’iz Emassan” (“You are not Alone”) Foundation and the “Oila” (“Family”) Center and UNICEF.
UNICEF works with the Government of Uzbekistan to strengthen the child protection system and in implementation of the CRC recommendations to improve the situation of vulnerable children in the country.
