Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan plans to increase electricity supplies to Afghanistan, Deputy Chairman of Uzbekenergo (Uzbek Energy) Shukhrat Sheraliyev said on Saturday.
According to him, to increase the supply, Uzbekenergo began to build a new transmission line “Surhan-Puli-Khumri”.
Uzbekistan and Afghanistan signed an agreement on the construction of a 500 kV transmission line “Surhan-Puli-Khumri” in December 2017. The document was signed within the framework of the visit of the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani to Uzbekistan.
Shukhrat Sheraliyev said that Uzbekistan has already started construction work on the territory of the country. In June 2018, construction work will start on the territory of Afghanistan.
The length of the power line will be 260 km. The new line will increase the supply of electricity from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan by 70% - up to 6 billion kWh per year. The project will be completed by the end of 2020.
The cost of the project is US$150 million. The Government of Afghanistan will allocate about US$120 million for the project. Uzbekenergo will also direct its own funds for implementation of the project.
Sheraliyev underlined that Uzbekistan began supplying electricity to Afghanistan in 2002. In 2017, Uzbekistan supplied 1.8 billion kWh to Afghanistan. In 2018, Uzbekistan plans to supply up to 2 billion kWh electricity to Afghanistan.
The construction of the power line will also allow Uzbekistan to enter new markets, in particular, to the market of Pakistan.
