Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani will deliver speeches at the opening of the Tashkent International High Level Conference on Afghanistan "Peace Process, Security Cooperation and Regional Cooperation".
According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, the conference will be held in Tashkent from 26 to 27 March 2018.
The foreign policy department of Uzbekistan said that UN Secretary General António Guterres, UN Special Representative for Afghanistan Tadamiti Yamamoto and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Magerini will attend the conference.
It is expected that the foreign ministers of China, Russia, the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, France, Turkey, India, Iran, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates will also attend the conference.
The forum participants will express their consolidated position at the regional and global levels on the need for the early start of direct talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban without any preconditions being put forward.
Following the results of the conference, it is planned to adopt the Tashkent Declaration, which, as expected, will reflect the following key points:
First, the peace process must be led by the forces of the Afghans themselves, in accordance with the provisions of the resolutions and decisions of the General Assembly and the UN Security Council;
Second, the guaranteed integration of the armed opposition into the political life of Afghanistan and its recognition as a legitimate political force is an important factor in the success of the peace process;
Third, the international community strongly opposes all forms and manifestations of terrorism without any distinction, and also recognizes that the threats of transnational terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime are common challenges to stability and sustainable development, both for Afghanistan and for the region and the world generally.
On the eve of the Tashkent conference, the first meeting of the new format of cooperation "Central Asia + Afghanistan" (C5 + 1) will also take place, aimed at discussing specific areas of interaction between the countries of Central Asia and Afghanistan.
The work of this format will contribute to the successful integration of Afghanistan into the system of trade, economic and infrastructural ties with the states of Central Asia, the effective implementation of specific projects and programs of a regional scale.
"Speaking with the initiative to hold the Tashkent conference, Uzbekistan does not intend to limit itself to holding it as a one-time event, but will continue to make active efforts both at the bilateral and multilateral levels to promote a peaceful political process in Afghanistan," the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.
