Ombudsman receives the UN Special Rapporteur

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 3 October 2017, Ulugbek Mukhammadiev, the Commissionaire of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights (ombudsman), met with the Special Rapporteur of the UN Council on Human Rights on freedom of religion or belief Ahmed Shaheed.
The Ombudsman informed the delegation about measures taken in the country to ensure human rights and freedoms, to strengthen the role and importance of national institutions for protection of human rights in implementation of democratic reforms, and development of civil society in the country.
It was stated the law on improving activities of Ombudsman was adopted in Uzbekistan in August 2017.
The Ombudsman elaborated on issues of ensuring the rights of citizens to freedom of conscience and religion. During the conversation it was noted that the Constitution and laws, take into account the main provisions and requirements of international acts in this sphere, guarantee citizens freedom of conscience, right to form and join religious organizations. The state created identical, uniform conditions for the activities of all religious organizations.
During the meeting, the sides discussed issues of strengthening cooperation in ensuring human rights for freedom of conscience and religion.
