UN Special Rapporteur meets with Minister of Interior Affairs

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 3 October, the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief Ahmed Shaheed paid visit to the Ministry of Interior Affairs of Uzbekistan.
At the meeting with Minister Pulat Bobojonov, the parties discussed issues of ensuring constitutional rights to freedom of conscience of prisoners and persons held in custody, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.
It was noted that the convicts are guaranteed freedom of conscience, thereby giving them the right to profess any religion or not to profess any. Convicts, at their request, may invite servants of religious associations, registered in accordance with established procedure. They can also use of religious objects and religious literature.
It was stated that Uzbekistan has one of the lowest rates in the world in terms of the number of people held in detention centers – 137 people per 100,000 habitants.
At the meeting, other issues of mutual interest were also discussed.
