Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Today, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov received the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and the Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Tadamichi Yamamoto.
During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on pressing international and regional problems in the context of development of the situation in Afghanistan, the press service of the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.
The Uzbek side noted that establishment of peace and stability in Afghanistan, maintenance and development of friendly relations with this neighboring state is one of the main priorities of Uzbekistan’s foreign policy.
The Uzbek side proceeds from the premise that consensus, at the regional level, as well as mutual understanding and common approaches on a wide international scale, is an important condition for the solution of the Afghan issue, in addition to achieving intra-Afghan consensus.
Currently, Uzbekistan is taking steps to intensify relations with Afghanistan in various areas of mutual interest, in particular by intensifying political dialogue, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian cooperation. It is these goals that led to the establishment of the Institute of the Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan.
Tadamichi Yamamoto was also informed about the forthcoming international conference on security issues in Central Asia, which is planned to be held under the auspices of the United Nations.
The sides also discussed other issues of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United Nations.
