Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbek newspaper Pravda Vostoka made a report on threat of construction of large dams to ecology and social development.
It said that the Brazilian authorities abolished a license issued to construction of mega-dam on Tapojas river. The paper said that it was victory for local population.
The expected capacity of the facility was 8,000 megawatts and the cost – US$10 billion. People against the project said that realization of the dam will damage environment and social development of the country.
The paper said that this decision can serve as example for the Central Asian regions, where two countries are planning to construct two large dams at Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers. It added that the countries are ignoring long-term catastrophic consequences for the region citing necessity to create generating capacities to solve energy deficit.
The report also cited researches and opinions of several scientists, who are saying that large dams hurt environment.
Construction of large dams in Central Asia will worsen ecological situation and water use system in the region. It can lead to catastrophic situation as the water flow is decreasing.
It added that large dams are constructed in areas with regular earthquake threat. Rogun dam is located near powerful salt layer, which will diffuse to water.
Damage to these dams can lead to flooding of several hundreds of settlements and death of population in the country, located in lower flow of the rivers.
