Uzbekistan introduces prison terms for online extremism propaganda

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan has introduced the punishment of up to eight years of imprisonment for disseminating ideas of religious extremism.
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a law “On amendments and addenda to some legislative acts of Uzbekistan” on 25 April.
Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan passed the law on 30 March and Senate approved it on 31 March. The document came into force on 26 April.
The law amended the Article 244-1 (“Production, distribution and demonstration of materials containing a threat to public security and public order”) of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan.
An addendum "using media or telecommunications networks and the Internet," was included in the Article 244-1. The actions stipulated by this article are punished by 5 to 8 years of imprisonment.
The law also introduced punishment for propagating or demonstrating emblems or symbols of religious extremist and terrorist organizations. These actions are punished by 3 to 5 years of imprisonment.
