Technologies 27/08/2009 Vimpelcom’s net revenue decreases by 14.7% in Uzbekistan in 2Q

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Open Joint Stock Company “Vimpel-Communications” (VimpelCom), the leading provider of telecommunications services in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), said its net operating revenue in Uzbekistan decreased by 14.7% quarter-to-quarter in the second quarter of 2009.

VimpelCom holds 100% share at Unitel LLC, mobile communication operator, and Buzton JV LLC, fixed communication operator, in Uzbekistan.

The net operating revenue decreased from 1.984 billion rubles or US$58 million in the first quarter of 2009 to 1.693 billion soums or US$53 million in the second quarter of 2009.

The company said its revenue from mobile communication decreased by 15.4% quarter-to-quarter to 1.594 billion soums in the second quarter 2009 and from fixed communication fell by 1% to 100 million rubles.

Second quarter OIBDA decreased by 22.9% compared to the first quarter of 2009 to 865 million rubles, while OIBDA margin made up 51.1%. OIBDA is defined as operating income before depreciation, amortization and impairment loss. OIBDA margin is OIBDA expressed as a percentage of total net operating revenues.

Number of subscribers of Unitel made up 3.605 million at the end of the second quarter or decreased by 1.3% quarter-to-quarter. Market share of the company fell from 27.9% in the first quarter of 2009 to 25% in the second quarter of 2009.

The MOU decreased from 238.6 minutes in the first quarter 2009 to 225.6 minutes in the reporting period. MOU (Monthly Average Minutes of Use per User) is calculated by dividing the total number of minutes of usage for incoming and outgoing calls during the relevant period (excluding guest roamers) by the average number of subscribers during the period and dividing by the number of months in that period.

ARPU fell from 177.1 rubles (or US$5.2) in the first quarter of 2009 to 150.6 rubles (US$4.7) in the second quarter of 2009. ARPU (Monthly Average Revenue per User) is calculated by dividing the company’s service revenue during the relevant period, including roaming revenue and interconnect revenue, but excluding revenue from connection fees, sales of handsets and accessories and other non-service revenue, by the average number of the company’s subscribers during the period and dividing by the number of months in that period.

VimpelCom said its capital expenditures in Uzbekistan grew from 50 million rubles in the first quarter of 2009 to 241 million rubles in the second quarter of 2009.
