Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan has commented on the information regarding the amputation of a two-month-old girl’s hands due to improper treatment by medical personnel. The information was previously circulated on social media.
In the Ministry’s statement, it was clarified that on 9 December 2024, at around 3:30 PM, a girl named K. Zh., born in 2024, was brought to the City Children’s Clinical Hospital No. 1 in the Shaykhontohur district of Tashkent by her parents. She was complaining of high fever, cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, restlessness, and weakness.
After an initial examination by the on-duty doctor, N. Sultanova, the child was diagnosed with "Community-acquired pneumonia." Given the severe condition of the baby, she was immediately hospitalized in the newborn and premature infant pathology department.
Following additional clinical examinations by a hematologist, angiologist, pediatric surgeon, and neonatal surgeon, the primary diagnosis was established as "Sepsis. Septicemia. Community-acquired pneumonia of COVID-19 etiology." Congenital heart disease was also identified, including "Ventricular septal defect" and complications such as "Respiratory failure 1-2 degree" and "Cardiovascular failure 1-2A degree."
During treatment, the baby developed "Thromboembolism of the left brachial artery. Acute circulatory failure of 3A degree in the left arm and hand. Multiple organ failure." To save the baby’s life, a decision was made to amputate, which was carried out with the parents’ consent.
Currently, the child’s condition is stable.
The Ministry of Health has taken full control of this case, and an internal investigation is underway.
After the investigation is completed, the Ministry promises to provide further information.
