Uzbekistan’s GDP increases by 5.6% in Jan-Jun

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In accordance with a preliminary assessment, in January-June 2023, the GDP of the Republic of Uzbekistan at current prices amounted to 469.62 trillion soums and, compared to January-June 2022, increased in real terms by 5.6%. The GDP deflator index, in relation to the prices of January-June 2022, amounted to 111.9%.

When calculated in US dollars at the average exchange rate for the reporting period, nominal GDP amounted to US$41.23 billion.

A positive contribution to GDP growth was made by the sectors of agriculture, forestry and fisheries – 0.7 p.p., industry – 1.4 p.p., construction – 0.3 p.p. and services – 2.6 p.p. Due to the growth of net taxes on products, GDP increased by 0.6 p.p.

Gross value added created by all sectors of the economy amounted to 94.6% of the total GDP and increased by 5.5% (contribution to GDP growth – 5.0 percentage points). Net taxes on products in the structure of GDP amounted to 5.4% and, compared to January-June 2022, they increased by 6.9% (contribution to GDP growth – 0.6 p.p.).

According to the results of January-June 2023, insignificant changes were noted in the sectoral structure of GDP. Thus, the share of the service sector in the sectoral structure of GDP (GVA) increased from 44.1% to 47.1%, while the share of agriculture, forestry and fisheries decreased from 20.9% to 20.1%, industry - from 28.0% to 26.3%, construction - from 7.0% to 6.5%.

In January-June 2023, GDP per capita at current prices amounted to 12.97 million soums (or, in equivalent, US$1,139.2).

As it is clear from the presented infographic, in January-June 2023, GDP per capita growth in real terms, compared to January-June 2022, amounted to 3.4%, and compared to the corresponding period of 2019, 11.7%.

According to the results of January-June 2023, agriculture, forestry and fisheries showed positive growth rates at the level of 3.8% (in January-June 2022 – 2.6%, January-June 2021 – 1.8%, January-June 2020 – 2.4%, January-June 2019 – 2.4%).

The positive dynamics in this industry is due to the growth of livestock by 3.5% (in January-June 2022 – 2.0%, January-June 2021 – 4.1%, January-June 2020 – 1.6%, January-June 2019 – 2.0%).

Along with this, crop production for the specified period increased by 4.3% (in January-June 2022 - an increase of 3.8%, January-June 2021 - a decrease of 1.4%, January-June 2020 - an increase of 3.8%, January-June 2019 - an increase of 3.6%).

According to the results of January-June 2023, an increase in value added by 5.6% is observed in the industry. The positive dynamics in this industry is mainly due to an increase in the value added of the mining industry and quarrying by 0.2%, the manufacturing industry – by 6.3%, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning – by 9.9%. The water supply, sewerage, waste collection and disposal industry also showed a positive growth of 3.6%.

Compared to January-June 2022, construction work in January-June 2023 increased by 4.8%. At the same time, the growth rate of construction of buildings and structures amounted to 101.8%, civil facilities – 102.3% and specialized construction works – 137.9%.

In January-June 2023, the volume of construction work amounted to 68 139.2 billion soums. Of their total volume, large organizations account for 22.9%, small enterprises and microfirms – 59.7%, individuals – 17.4%.

According to the results of January-June 2023, the gross value added of the service sector amounted to 209403.6 billion soums and, compared to January-June 2022, increased by 6.4%. Including trade services grew by 6.8%, accommodation and catering - by 9.7%, transportation and storage - by 7.6%, information and communication - by 22.2%, other services - by 4.9%.

In January-June 2023, in the structure of gross value added of trade, the largest share fell on retail trade (except for trade in motor vehicles) and reached 63.5%. The share of wholesale trade (except trade in motor vehicles) amounted to 29.4%, wholesale and retail trade in motor vehicles and their repair – 7.1%.

According to the results of January-June 2023, the share of transportation and storage in the GDP of the Republic of Uzbekistan amounted to 5.8%. In the structure of the gross value added of the transportation and storage industry, the largest share fell on road transport – 52.5%. Pipeline transport accounted for 16.5%, railway transport – 9.3%, ancillary transport activities – 14.1%, air transport – 7.6% of the total value added of this industry.

In January-June 2023, the share of information and communications in the country's economy amounted to 2.1%. In the value added structure of this industry, the main share fell on communication services (wire and mobile communication services, the Internet, etc.) and amounted to 55.7%. The remaining 44.3% of the added value created in this industry comes from other areas (publishing, computer programming, programming and broadcasting, etc.

In January-June 2023, the share of information and communication technology (ICT) services in the country's economy amounted to 1.9%. The value added of ICT services consists of communication services – 60.3%, computer programming, consulting and other related services – 22.3%, data hosting and processing services, Web portals – 9.8%, repair of computers and communication equipment – 3.9%, software release – 3.7%.

According to the results of January-June 2023, small entrepreneurship (businesses) created added value in the amount of 216 034.0 billion soums, or 48.6% of the total value added in the economy. At the same time, the share of agriculture, forestry and fisheries in the total GVA of small business (business) amounted to 39.9%, industry – 11.7%, construction – 10.6% and services – 37.8%.

The share of small entrepreneurship (business) in the main sectors of the economy, it amounted to: agriculture, forestry and fisheries – 96.6%, construction – 78.7%, services – 39.0% and industry – 21.7%.
