Uzbekistan, UAE discuss cooperation of parliaments

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation led by the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Tanzila Narbaeva, currently in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to participate in the parliamentary session as part of the UN Climate Change Conference, held negotiations with the Chairperson of the Federal National Council of the UAE, Saqr Gobash, on 5 December.

In recent years, Uzbekistan and the UAE have been developing and reaching new levels of multilateral cooperation. The ties between the parliaments of the two countries are consistently strengthening.

The sides discussed a wide range of issues related to expanding cooperation in political, trade, and economic spheres, particularly in addressing the consequences of climate change. It also covered matters related to expanding inter-parliamentary dialogue.

In recent years, mutual trade turnover between our countries has quadrupled, reaching US$475.7 million in mutual trade from January to September 2023. This figure increased by 40% compared to the corresponding period last year.

The number of UAE-invested enterprises operating in our country has increased 2.5 times over the past 5 years. The portfolio of investment projects, covering areas such as green energy, agriculture, transport and logistics, and tourist infrastructure, amounts to more than $4 billion.

Both sides noted that there is an opportunity to multiply these indicators, and parliaments should be proactive in this direction.

Inter-parliamentary cooperation is one of the most important mechanisms for developing ties between our countries at all levels. In this regard, opinions were exchanged on ensuring the continuity of strengthening cooperation between the parliaments of Uzbekistan and the UAE, particularly in the areas of legislation and parliamentary control.

The need to establish a systematic parliamentary control over the implementation of tasks set in "roadmaps" based on agreements reached at the highest level, revitalizing the activities of "friendship groups," was emphasized, which is an important aspect of "people's diplomacy."

An agreement was reached on the continuation of cooperation within the UN, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and other multilateral structures.

The Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis proposed that the Chairperson of the Federal National Council of the UAE visit Uzbekistan in 2024.
