Uzbekistan U-20 falls to South Korea in Asian U-20 Cup quarterfinals

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan U-20 national football team concluded its campaign in the AFC U-20 Asian Cup after losing to South Korea in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals.

As a result, the Uzbek squad missed out on securing a spot in the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The match ended in a 3-3 draw in regular time. Asilbek Jumaev opened the scoring in the 18th minute, netting the ball after a corner kick. However, just eight minutes later, Shin Min-ha equalized for South Korea, also capitalizing on a set piece.

In the second half, Shin Min-ha completed his brace, and Kim Tae-won extended South Korea’s lead to two goals. Despite the deficit, Uzbekistan fought back: in the 90th minute, Muhammadali Urinboev reduced the gap, and moments before the final whistle, Abdugofur Khaydarov scored the equalizer, forcing extra time.

Neither team found the net in extra time, leading to a penalty shootout, where South Korea emerged victorious with a 3-1 scoreline.

South Korea will face Saudi Arabia in the semifinals on February 26.
