Uzbekistan to introduce fines for illegal involvement of a child in religious education

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – During a session of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a draft law "On amending and supplementing certain legislative acts of the republic of uzbekistan to further strengthen children’s rights" was considered in the first reading.

The draft law proposes amending Article 47 of the Administrative Responsibility Code with new provisions establishing administrative liability for the illegal involvement of children in religious upbringing by parents or their substitutes.

According to the draft, illegal involvement of a child in religious upbringing will incur a fine ranging from 10 to 15 sizes of basic estimated value.

In case of repeated violation within a year after the imposition of administrative penalty, a fine ranging from 15 to 25 sizes of basic estimated value or administrative arrest for up to 15 days is envisaged.

The draft law also prohibits involving children in religious upbringing in violation of the legislation. This includes transferring children to receive religious education from unregistered or unlicensed organizations, as well as individuals without specific religious education and corresponding permission from the central authority managing religious organizations in Uzbekistan.

The adoption of this draft law aims to protect children’s rights in the field of education, promote their harmonious development, and prevent involvement in religious extremism, separatism, and fanaticism.

The draft law was approved by deputies in the first reading.
