Uzbekistan to improve television and radio broadcasting
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan is planning to develop and adopt new law “On television and radio broadcasting” directed at developing this industry and boosting its role in democratization process of the country. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov stated this in his speech at joint session of Legislative Chamber and Senate.

It is worth to note that currently the activity of this sphere is regulated by separate articles of the Laws “On mass media”, “On radio frequency spectrum”, “On telecommunications”, “On information”. At the same time, it is necessary to develop single law in order to reform television and radio broadcasting into independently powerful industry and developing of new forms and types of television and radio broadcasting.

Experts noted that adaptation of law will allow to create conditions for further development of competition in this sphere, creation and spread of TV and radio programmes, introduction of new perspective broadcasting technologies, both mobile and digital TV, creating new perspective sectors of TV industry.

New law is also directed at determining mechanisms of legal regulation and principles of activity of national broadcasting system, as independence, source of financing, creating terms for completion and avoiding monopoly in mass media and solving other problems.

There are several public organizations, which are supporting non-governmental mass media to strengthen their material-technical base and personnel potential – National Association of Electronic Mass Media (uniting over 100 electronic mass media) and Public Fund on support and development of independent print mass media and information agencies of Uzbekistan.

For last ten years, number of print media in Uzbekistan rose by 1.5 times, electronic mass media – 7 times. Total number of mass media, operating in Uzbekistan, reached 1,200. About 53% of all television and 85% of radio channels are nongovernmental. Mass media in Uzbekistan spread information on seven languages, including in English. Modern digital and multimedia technologies are used in production of broadcasting products. Number of internet users in Uzbekistan is developing fast and currently there are over 6 million users.
