Uzbekistan to chair the CIS from 1 January

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - From 1 January to 31 December 2020, in accordance with the decision of the Ashgabat CIS summit, Uzbekistan will assume the chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan.

Promising areas of interaction within the CIS and the priorities of the chairmanship of Uzbekistan were formulated in a speech by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth on 11 October in Ashgabat.

In his speech, the head of our state noted the need to expand multilateral cooperation, primarily in the areas of developing trade and economic ties, promoting joint projects in various industries, unlocking transport and logistics and transit potential, strengthening security, and intensifying cultural and humanitarian exchanges.

The chairmanship in the CIS will be carried out in accordance with the Concept published by Uzbekistan today, as well as plans and programs in various areas of cooperation adopted within the organization.

Our country will simultaneously preside in the Council of Heads of State, the Council of Heads of Government, the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Economic Council, the Council of Permanent Plenipotentiaries of the Member States to the Charter and other organs of the Commonwealth, the Commission on Economic Affairs at the Economic Council.

As part of the chairmanship, it is planned to hold about 70 events of various levels and formats, including meetings of the Council of Heads of State, the Council of Heads of Government, the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Economic Council, the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, the Economic Forum, the Forum of Regions, the Forum of Scientific and creative intelligentsia and others.

During the chairmanship of Uzbekistan, it is planned to prepare and adopt more than 10 conceptual documents aimed at further developing multilateral cooperation.

In order to inform the public about the priorities of the Uzbek chairmanship and the events held within its framework, a special section “Uzbekistan’s Chairmanship in the CIS in 2020” was created on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 28 December 2019.
