Uzbekistan 04/12/2010 Uzbekistan, South Korea hold political consultations in Seoul

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Ninth round of political consultations between Foreign Affairs Ministries of Uzbekistan and South Korea at the level of deputy ministers was held in Seoul on 29 November 2010, the Uzbek Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

The sides exchanged opinion on current state and perspectives of bilateral cooperation in politics, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres, perspectives of development in context of implementation of the joint declaration on strategic partnership, signed in Seoul on 29 March 2006.

It was said that important stimulation factor for gradual development of the Uzbek-Korean cooperation and strategic relations is common approaches and positions on important directions of bilateral cooperation, regional and international policy.

The sides discussed actual issues of international character of mutual interest, including settlement of situation in Korean Peninsula, Afghanistan and events in Kyrgyz Republic.

Discussing situation at Korean Peninsula, the sides noted importance of establishing peace and stability in the region, fast settlement of North Korean nuclear problem and rehabilitation of the six-sided negotiations.

The Korean side expressed gratitude to the government of Uzbekistan for expressing firm support to South Korea after artillery bombardment of North Korean armed forces to Yeonpyeong Island.

It was noted importance of uniting efforts of international community to ensure peace in the Peninsula and prevent military conflict.

During the political consultations, the sides expressed concern over situation in Afghanistan, where the military actions are ending and peaceful people are dying. The Uzbek side concerned position on this issue, which was announced by the Uzbek President Islam Karimov at the UN Summit on Millennium Development Goals in New York in September 2010.

The Korean side positively rated proposal of Uzbekistan on creation of 6+3 contact group, its efforts on rendering efficient assistance to rehabilitation of Afghanistan, including supply of electricity and formation of transport infrastructure in the country.

The sides noted that South Korean companies are playing key role in implementation of projects within Navoi free industrial and economic zone and agreed to adopt further measures on strengthening investment cooperation, based on joint mutual beneficial and long-term interests.

The sides agreed to hold next tenth round of political consultations between Foreign Affairs Ministries in Tashkent city in 2011.
