Uzbekistan seeks to expand access to European markets under GSP+

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 4-5 December, a delegation from Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Investments, Industry, and Trade (MIIT) participated in the EU’s working group meeting on the implementation of the Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP+) in Brussels.

Uzbekistan presented the results of its participation in GSP+ since 2021, highlighting a threefold increase in exports to the EU, reaching US$1.15 billion. The country has established stable exports of over 1,100 product categories, including agricultural products, textiles, electrical equipment, and chemicals, out of a total of 6,200 available.

A proposal was made to expand the list of products eligible for GSP+ benefits, including fresh fruits and vegetables, and to revise seasonal quotas to ensure the stability of supplies.

MIIT also proposed extending the GSP+ arrangement for an additional 10 years.

During meetings with representatives from the European Commission, the issues of improving access for Uzbek goods to the EU market were discussed, including the revision of import quotas for metal products and attracting EU technical assistance to meet European standards.

Both parties emphasized the importance of these negotiations for strengthening trade and economic cooperation.
