Uzbekistan ranked 60th in the Global Peace Index

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan took 60th place in the Global Peace Index. Compared to the previous report, the country improved its position by 15 points.

The Global Peace Index (GPI), developed by the Institute for Economics and Peace, is the world’s leading tool for measuring peace and ranks 163 independent states and territories, covering 99.7 percent of the world’s population.

According to the study, there has been a significant deterioration in the situation over the past ten years. There are currently 56 active conflicts in the world. The risk of low-intensity conflicts escalating into full-fledged hostilities has increased significantly.

The report also indicates that over the past five years, 100 countries have been involved in some form of external conflict, up from 59 countries in 2008.

In addition, 86 countries increased their military spending, while only 50 countries reduced it.

More than 95 million people are currently either refugees or have been displaced.

Some 92 countries are involved in conflicts beyond their borders.

It is noted that the growing number of countries involved in conflicts complicates negotiations and long-term conflict resolution.

The internationalization of conflicts is due to increased competition between major powers and the activation of middle-level countries in their regions, which significantly increases the likelihood of new major conflicts compared to previous years.
