Uzbekistan proposes to ban marriage between collateral relatives

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Committee on Family and Women Affairs of Uzbekistan has presented a draft law amending the Family Code, aimed at expanding the prohibition on marriages between relatives.

According to the document, new restrictions are being added to the already existing ban on marriages with full and half-siblings.

In particular, it is proposed to prohibit marriages between close relatives of the second, third, and fourth degrees of collateral kinship. This includes siblings, their children, the siblings of parents, their children, as well as the siblings of grandparents and their descendants.

Since 2021, Uzbekistan has already had bans on marriages between relatives in the direct ascending and descending lines, as well as between full and half siblings, and between adoptive parents and adopted children.

The draft law provides for an exception to the ban in the case of a negative result from a medical genetic test (DNA test).

It also proposes to introduce liability for failing to meet the medical examination requirements before entering into marriage.
