Uzbekistan 14/09/2007 Uzbekistan praises activity of UNICEF office in Tashkent
Uzbekistan has sent information on measures directed to protection rights of children in the country to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UN News Centre said in Russian.

In letter, which was published as official UN document, it was said UNICEF, UN Children’s Fund, actively participates in creation favourable conditions for live of children and protection of their rights in Uzbekistan.

UNICEF office in Uzbekistan currently engaged in realization of projects on protection of health of women and children, improve quality of education and skills of local authorities in protection of children and rights of families.

Uzbekistan underlined support of UNICEF in protection children, creation of juvenile justice, institute of children ombudsman and development of social workers’ institute.

In 2006, UNICEF began to provide support to the Government of Uzbekistan in drawing up a draft law on juvenile justice. The law will make it possible to strengthen the guarantees for respecting the rights of minors who have come into conflict with the law.

The letter said the general education for children with limited opportunities project is currently being implemented in accordance with an agreement between the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Asian Development Bank. The project, with an overall value of US$1.5 million, is to last three years and comprises six special boarding schools and 20 general education schools. It is designed to provide help for teaching children requiring medical assistance in general education schools, carry out major repairs and maintenance in educational institutions, upgrade their physical and technical infrastructure, create special means and facilities for inclusive education and provide the necessary equipment and so forth.
