In order to increase share of renewable energy in fuel-energy balance of Uzbekistan, Uzbekenergo plans to construct small and medium hydroelectric power stations with total capacity of 323.6 megawatt at natural waterways of the country.

In particular, it is planned to construct four small hydroelectric power stations with capacity of 203.6 megawatt and preliminary cost of US$227.8 million in Tashkent region and two in Surkhandarya region with the capacity of 120 megawatt and the cost of US$148.9 million.

Currently, Uzbekistan is completing construction of two small hydroelectric power stations - Ahangaran and Andijan with total cost of US$16.9 million. Annually Andijan hydroelectric power station will produce 171.1 million kilowatt per hour of electricity and Ahangaran hydroelectric power station - 66.5 million of kilowatt per hour.

By 2012, it is planned to construct Kamolot small hydroelectric power station at Chirchiq-Bozsu section with the cost of US$11.3 million and the annual designed capacity of eight megawatt. Construction of new small hydroelectric power station will allow to produce 35 million kilowatt per hour of electricity, which will save 11 million cubic meters of natural gas a year.

Uzbekistan will invest US$3.3 million of own resources and US$8 million of loans to construction of the hydroelectric power station.

According to evaluation of the specialists, Uzbekistan has over ten water reservoirs, irrigation channels and mountain rivers, where about 141 power station with the total capacity of 1,180 megawatt with annual production capacity of 4.6 billion kilowatt per hour of electricity can be produced.

Currently, installed capacity of power stations in Uzbekistan makes up 12.4 million kilowatt per hour, including 12 million kilowatt per hour fell to share of enterprises of Uzbekenergo. The share of power stations of other departments in total electricity production makes up 3% (362.5 megawatt).

Main share of electricity (90%) are produced at ten thermoelectric power stations with the total capacity of 10.6 million kilowatt per hour. About 29 hydro power stations with the capacity of 1.4 million kilowatt work in Uzbekistan.
