Uzbekistan opens new center for collaboration with Columbia University in social protection

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A new Center for Strengthening Local Communities and Social Welfare has commenced operations in Uzbekistan. This organization will serve as a platform for implementing innovative solutions in the field of social protection and the development of social services in the country.

The Center was established through collaboration between the National Agency for Social Protection of the Population of Uzbekistan, Columbia University, UNICEF, and other partners. Its primary mission is to introduce advanced innovations to address current social protection issues.

"The opening of this Center represents a significant step forward in the development of social services and support for vulnerable groups. The Center will be a source of knowledge and innovation, as well as a venue for exchanging experiences and best practices for social workers," noted Shakhnoza Mirziyoeva, First Deputy Director of the National Agency for Social Protection.

The goal of the Center is to enhance the social security system in Uzbekistan. Its activities will focus on developing professional skills for workers, creating effective programs and methodologies, conducting significant research, and strengthening international cooperation.

Rehina Castijo, Head of the UNICEF Representative Office in Uzbekistan, emphasized, "Qualified social service staff working with families and communities are crucial for child protection. They help coordinate efforts and resources, providing a support system for children and families across various sectors. The Center will provide a robust infrastructure for advancing education, research, and practice in social protection and social services."

The Center will leverage the academic guidance and mentorship of the Columbia University School of Social Work (CSSW), building on its leading role in social work to enhance the well-being of vulnerable groups and strengthen social protection systems.

Dr. Nabila El-Bassel, Professor at Columbia University and Director of the Social Intervention Group (SIG), added, "The Center aims to utilize the community-based structure of mahallas in Uzbekistan for community-led initiatives, which could lead to the development of effective and sustainable social work practices. This collaboration expands Columbia University’s commitment to global social welfare through engagement with local systems."

The Center will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and strengthen international partnerships. This collaboration will contribute to the development of effective strategies and programs in social protection based on empirical data.

Melissa D. Begg, Dean and Professor at Columbia School of Social Work, concluded, "Columbia University faculty will play a key role in developing innovative social programs within the unique context of Uzbekistan. The Center will also provide our students with valuable international experience. We are confident that this collaboration will transform social work education and practice in Uzbekistan and broaden our global perspectives."
