Central Asia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan is not against the construction of the Roghun power station in Tajikistan, it only warns of emerging problems for the region. Shoqosim Shoislomov, the ambassador of Uzbekistan to Tajikistan, said this at a regional conference "SCO and the Republic of Tajikistan: present situation and prospects for future cooperation", Tajik newspaper Nigoh on 9 April reported.

The Uzbek diplomat continued that the announcement of Uzbekistan’s stance on construction of hydroelectric power stations in the Central Asian region does not mean that "Our country is against their construction. Uzbekistan’s standpoint is that any construction project should be started after detailed study and analysis in order to avoid any problems in the region later. Their construction should not be in the interest of only one country, but should also take into account the requirements of neighbouring countries. If the construction of these facilities helps Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan solve their problems, they will also be to the benefit of other countries in the region. It is even said that Uzbekistan is allegedly against construction of power stations in the region. These are groundless speculations. Uzbekistan has always been positive about the development of the countries in the region."

On the other hand, Sayfullo Safarov, deputy director of the Centre for Strategic Research under the Tajik president, said that it was already a serious step [towards the region’s development] to analyse the present situation and the future of the region in a scientific, analytical and open round table discussion. The tangle of new policies have been unravelled especially after the ambassador of this country voiced Uzbekistan’s standpoint on the sensitive and important issue of construction of hydroelectric power stations in the region. Until now, media and politics have differently shaped the stance and views of this country. But today the ambassador showed a different and open position of this country, and this displays a new shape in the policies of the two countries in the region.

It is said that the Uzbek ambassador expressed the political position of his country for the first time. The conference was held at the initiative of the Centre for Strategic Research of Tajikistan.
